A Sorta Sonnet for Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Not like the other melancholy folk,
Sonic Saraswati super-wahing;
Harmonium moon bruises hiss and kiss,
Kneel and kick, stretch subterranean vowels
Across our outgrown lives. Hammer and nails
Sampled smashed records into smash record.
Vibraphone voices jolt our rusting chaos
Sorrow symphony, specters straddling
Sea-washed harbors, shy of dampened shoreline.
Scratched distortion twists us into bowed saws,
Eerie theremin, metallic tin cans.
Piaf trip hop, Joplin/Simone sampling
Every big box crayon’s built-in sharpener.
Die is cast, grab your cassette and pencil.
